Jan Toorop (1858-1928) was born in Java and raised in the Netherlands, and both cultures shaped his art. His stylized female figures feature impossibly long, flowing hair and elongated limbs that draw from Javanese wayang shadow puppets. The two figures in this composition exist in a world of curves and counter-curves, where every line seems to be in motion. Toorop moved between Impressionism, Pointillism, Art Nouveau, and Symbolism throughout his career, but these decorative figure compositions remain his most recognized work.
