Sandro Botticelli created "The Birth of Venus" during the Italian Renaissance, when Florence was the cultural center of Europe. The Medici family commissioned the work, and it became a symbol of the era's revival of classical mythology. The composition draws on ancient descriptions of Venus Anadyomene -- Venus rising from the sea. Botticelli's elongated figures and flowing lines give the painting a dreamlike quality that sets it apart from the more rigid compositions of his contemporaries.
