"Irises" was painted in May 1889, and Van Gogh considered it a study rather than a finished work. His brother Theo thought otherwise and submitted it to the Salon des Independants in Paris, where it was hung prominently. One white iris stands among the blue ones -- a detail that has sparked art historical debate for decades.
