Van Gogh painted over thirty self-portraits between 1886 and 1889. This one, from September 1889, is considered among his finest. The swirling blue-green background echoes "The Starry Night," while his face is rendered with a palette of greens, blues, and touches of orange. He painted it during a period of relative calm at the asylum, and it shows -- there is a composure in his expression that contrasts with the turbulent background. The painting now resides in the Musee d'Orsay in Paris.
