Van Gogh painted the poplars along the road near the Saint-Paul-de-Mausole asylum multiple times during his stay in 1889-1890. The poplar trees, tall and narrow, gave him vertical forms to play against the horizontal landscape and swirling skies. His brushstrokes follow the movement of the wind, bending trees and clouds in the same direction. These late landscapes show Van Gogh at his most expressive -- the paint itself seems to be in motion, and the viewer can almost feel the wind blowing through the scene.
