"Fruit" (or "Pomegranate") was one of Morris's first wallpaper designs, created in 1862 for Morris, Marshall, Faulkner & Co. The pattern draws from medieval tapestries and Middle Eastern decorative arts, combining European fruit with an almost Islamic sense of geometric rhythm. Morris hand-drew every element, and the design's complexity reflects his belief that pattern-making was an art equal to painting or sculpture. It remained in continuous production throughout his lifetime.
